Joanne Pence (committee member) posted the following comments to DorothyL (a HUGE mystery fan and writers list). It was posted after three long write-ups by Pari Noskin-Taichert:

+++++++++++++
Thank you, Pari, for your wonderful posts about Murder In The Grove. I learned something important from them: I made a big mistake by going to my home in Boise after the conference. I should have hung out at the hotel. Sounds like the fun continued!

For many of the authors and attendees, this conference was their first visit to Idaho. Boise is a little gem of a place with a clean, safe, and charming downtown.

My most cherished memory actually happened before the conference began. Anne Perry arrived a day early due to her long trip from Scotland, and so she had nothing special to do Friday afternoon. Author T.L. Cooper and I (we're both on the conference committee) walked around the downtown with her, checked out a very nice clothes boutique, and then...ahem!...I treated Anne Perry to a gelato. I couldn't believe I was actually sitting in Dawson's Coffee Shop in little ol' Boise, Idaho with one of the icons of the mystery world. In fact, I still can't believe it.

Some other random memories:

--attempting to herd authors (much worse than cats) through downtown Boise on a First Thursday evening, and seeing their amazement at the belly dancers and street musicians (bare bellies in Boise?)

--seeing the elegant agent Meredith Bernstein sitting at the counter in a 1955 soda joint (where nothing's changed in the past 61 years, believe me) after a group of us ordered milk shakes

--J.D. Rhoades giving lessons on the right way to say and use of "bless your heart"

--Kirk Russell explaining to people why he was walking around with a wooden tip-turned-up spatula

--Denise Swanson and her charming "personal assistant"

--the mind-curdling fact that Pari Noskin-Taichert (and I now know the "right" way to pronounce it), Mary Buckham and I all studied Mandarin Chinese (and now do nothing with it...)

--the way Anne Perry had most of the lunch crowd in tears over a story she told during her lunch-time keynote speech

--hearing lots of praise for Carolyn Wheat's day-long writing workshop, and that she teaches with a lot of humor.

One of the things we did for the first time this year was to host a "speakers' dinner" where all the authors, agents, editors and "experts" were given the opportunity to meet each other in a casual environment and talk and eat before the booksigning. It was a pleasant way for me to meet people like Con Lehane, Michael Sherer, Pat White, Aileen Baron, Kelly Jones, and others, as well as old friends such as Denise Dietz, Bob Weibezahl, Jo Grossman, C.J. Box, Mary Buckham, Ann Parker, and Twist Phelan

As a member of the committee, I spent more time racing up and down hallways or collapsing in exhaustion than attending panels and workshops, but I heard they were very successful. We're attempting to present a wealth of information for people interested in writing mysteries as well as fans. (Writers are readers, as we all know. In fact, the manager of the bookstore that worked with us said the sales of attending authors' books were "extraordinary." And she's keeping all the books that haven't yet sold in the store and on the shelves.)

So, all in all, it was a wonderful weekend in Boise, and we'll do it again next year...June 8-9, 2007.
